Service Cluster 03 / Four
Beyond the tick-box audit: root-cause, worker-centric due diligence.
Two decades of SA8000 and social-audit work taught us something — a certificate and an actual working condition are not the same thing. Today we do the work that begins after the audit closes.
Service Cluster 03 / FourProblem
Are the social conditions in your supply chain monitored in a certificate file, or in the daily experience of the worker?
The "S" axis is hardening fast under regulation: the EU's CSDDD, Germany's LkSG, modern slavery laws, the ESRS S1–S4 modules of CSRD. Companies are now directly accountable for conditions across their supply chains. At the same time, Rana Plaza (BSCI-audited buildings, 1,134 dead, 2013) and the Ali Enterprises fire (SA8000-certified facility, 2012) showed the pattern: a certified facility is not the same as a safe facility. Audit methodology is necessary but not sufficient.
Method
Root cause first, audit afterwards
Worker-centric monitoring and voice
- Multi-channel worker voice (anonymous, multilingual): WhatsApp/SMS, IVR, on-site face-to-face
- Triangulated data: worker self-report × payroll × production records (contradiction = signal)
- Quantitative monitoring of working hours, wages, pressure, harassment, discrimination
- Distinction between a "closed" grievance and a "resolved" grievance
Root-cause analysis
- Sub-tier economics (Tier-2 margin depends on Tier-1 demand; that is where overtime begins)
- The effect of lead producer ↔ buyer purchasing practices on the floor
- Seasonal labour waves and contract structures
- Management capacity and HR practices
Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD)
- UN Guiding Principles (UNGP) and OECD Due Diligence Guidance frameworks
- Saliency analysis: the most severe human rights risks are mapped
- Prevention, mitigation and remedy mechanisms
- Operational-level grievance mechanism (effective–accessible–predictable–equitable)
Supply-chain audit (where required)
- Supplier mapping (Tier 1, 2 and beyond)
- Audit against SA8000, BSCI, Sedex SMETA, Higg FEM standards
- Corrective action plan + root-cause cross-linking
- CSDDD / LkSG compliance documentation
Worker safety and occupational health
- ISO 45001 integration
- Field exercises (carrying the classic resilience muscle into this cluster)
- Worker awareness programmes
